ADA compliance for LULA Elevators

Can a LULA Elevator Be Used in a Home?

A LULA elevator is a limited use/limited application hybrid that combines features of a commercial elevator and a wheelchair lift. It is designed to be used only in a low-rise commercial building, not a home.

A LULA takes up only about half the space of a traditional elevator, with an area of just 18 square feet. It is designed to be used in a small building that does not have enough space for a conventional elevator. A LULA is just big enough to fit a wheelchair. It is intended to be used by only one handicapped individual at a time. It is not meant to be used by the general public.

A LULA requires only 14 inches for a pit and 102 inches of overhead space for an existing building or 134 inches for a new construction. It can travel up to 25 feet at a speed of up to 30 feet per minute. A LULA can transport up to 1,400 pounds.

If you need to improve accessibility at home for yourself or a family member, you have other elevator choices. Home elevators are available in a variety of designs with many optional features. You can choose from cable-driven, hydraulic, and pneumatic vacuum elevators in an array of sizes. Some are large enough to accommodate a wheelchair or multiple passengers. Residential elevators can also be customized with many decorative features.

If you need to improve mobility at home, you have many options available. However, if you need to increase accessibility for handicapped people who work at or visit your business, a LULA could be the solution you need.
